Pre-loved, hand-me-down, thrifted clothing and accessories, turned into one-of-a-kind works of wearable art.
"Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them." —Marc Jacobs
Since she was a child, GEMMA founder Jenna Davis loved designing and creating her own style.
"As far back as I can remember, I've loved fashion." says Jenna. "I would play dress-up as a little girl, wearing clothes in all sorts of creative ways, sometimes even taking a bath towel and trying to tie it on as a dress. As a teenager, I was always very interested in pop culture, current trends & hair and makeup. As a young adult, I started performing as a singer-songwriter, so fashion then became an important part of my performances. Shortly after I moved to Nashville to pursue songwriting in 2010, I started designing my own clothes & accessories to wear at shows. Initially, it was to recreate something else I had seen. Eventually friends took notice, and commissioned me for pieces, so I began to experiment with totally new ideas--- using thrifted pieces and scrap fabrics."
It wasn't until 2014 that Jenna realized her design ideas and thrift store fashion recycling side-projects were a dream worth pursuing. Thus, GEMMA was born, and officially launched in the Fall of 2015.....
"GEMMA" is a female name of Italian origin, meaning "gem."
At GEMMA, we believe that just as each gemstone in nature is unique and original, people are originals as well.
Since people are one-of-a-kind, we also believe that their fashion should be able to reflect their originality.
But that's not the only motivation behind GEMMA's needle and thread.
It's become recent knowledge that there has, sadly, been so much waste produced by the fashion industry. GEMMA is hoping to help make a difference in seeing that change. By using strictly pre-loved clothing to make new original pieces, it helps to cut down on this waste.
So, when you buy GEMMA swag, you're not just making a fashion statement about your own originality; you're also helping the environment and this beautiful world we live in!
“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” ― Coco Chanel
